Deciding to learn a new language is a fabulous idea. English and Spanish are almost equally spoken in the US. You’ll very often hear English messages repeated into Spanish. This is just one of the reasons why learning Spanish is a good idea. Yet there are a lot of people who experience difficulty with a new language. If you have trouble learning languages, here are a few tips to help you out:
Find a good tutor, if possible. Learning from books and CDs is great, but a tutor will be able to help you out with things you might not be able to figure out on your own with a book or a CD. Tutors are usually fluent in the languages that they teach. A tutor will be able to teach you the dialects in the language being taught.
If you will be traveling to a Spanish speaking country, learning the local dialect will help a lot with better communications. A tutor can help you to know the casual meanings of certain words found in Spanish. Language CD’s and books are usually more formal in what they teach. But a tutor can teach you the slang words.
Try to develop your ‘ear’ for Spanish, or any new language. Some languages put more emphasis on the ‘verbal’ than the written. Good listening skills are still very important if the language is still a living language. Correctly reciting the alphabet or composing a sentence will only take you a certain distance. You’ll still have to understand it when you hear it spoken. The best way to do this is to listen to as much of your chosen language as possible. If, after hearing just a few spoken words of Spanish you know what language it is, you’re on the sure path to learning success.
Try reviewing your vocabulary by using flashcards. This is a simple but effective way to reinforce your knowledge. Simply remembering what words mean is really what a large part of a language comes down to, and this method helps you do that. With flashcards you can quiz yourself on vocabulary and grammar and tenses. Flashcards are a tool that you can take around with you and use whenever you find an extra moment. Use them with someone else and let them quiz you sometimes. The process is extremely simple -on one side of the card, write the word in your own language; on the other side, the same word in Spanish.
You don’t need to needlessly stress over learning any new language, such as Spanish. You might have a rough time of it in the beginning, especially if you are not used to learning languages, but over time you will get better. You will become fluent if you persist and make good use of as many tricks and tips as possible.
